PREFACE

Trust is at the heart of every strong relationship, team, and organization—no matter the size, industry, or location. And yet, in today's world, where social media noise, political division, and echo chambers dominate, trust is taking a serious hit. It has not lost its value—far from it. Trust is more essential than ever. But in a world clouded by noise, division, and disconnection, many are losing sight of just how vital trust truly is.

We see the effects everywhere: increased skepticism, fractured relationships, and a breakdown in meaningful collaboration.

So, here is the real question: How can we expect our society to thrive if trust isn't at the core of our relationships, businesses, and everyday interactions?

The truth is simple—even if it is hard to face: we can't.

Trust is not something that exists on its own—it's not passive nor static. It can be earned, lost, and rebuilt—but only through intentional, deliberate, courageous actions. Trust evolves, adapts, and requires ongoing care because it doesn't just happen. It doesn't simply show up—instead, it must actively be earned, consistently nurtured, and deliberately cultivated. The real challenge isn't deciding whether trust matters; it's learning how to create and sustain it. And that begins with you.

This is where The Art of Trust Building comes in to guide you. It is an intentional framework designed to take trust from a vague ideal and turn it into how you live, breathe, and practice every day. Trust building is a journey, and every great journey requires a proper set of tools to help you navigate toward the relationships, outcomes, and impact you and your team most want to create.

At our core, we all long for the same things—to trust and be trusted, to love and be loved, to care for our families, and to live meaningful, connected lives. Trust is the bridge that makes all of this possible. When trust is strong, relationships flourish, teams thrive, and what we achieve together often goes beyond what we imagined.

Here's the bottom line: to earn trust, we must be willing to give it.

Whether you're a team member, a leader, a parent, or a friend, this book is for you. It's meant to empower you with practical tools to take proactive, nurturing measures through powerful language, meaningful conversations, intentional behaviors—and gratitude—that build and strengthen trust in every part of your life.

When you master The Art of Trust Building, you gain an advantage across all avenues of your life, career, and business. People will seek your advice, leadership, and partnership. You will become the embodiment of what's possible when trust becomes the cornerstone of your way of being.

This book also offers a shared language for trust—a way to connect more authentically, lead more effectively, and build strong bonds across every area of your life.

We are on this journey with you.

Our focus on trust began when leaders kept coming to us, asking why change efforts were stalling, teams were struggling to collaborate, and key initiatives were falling short. We listened. We dug in. As we talked with people across all levels of organizations and reviewed assessment data, a clear pattern emerged—at the root of these issues was a lack of trust. That realization pushed us to dig deeper. We gained insight through our respective doctoral research yet felt a strong drive to better understand the dynamics of trust. Over the next four years, following our doctoral studies in the midnineties, we interviewed 378 leaders, held focus groups with hundreds of people, and worked with 67 organizations across 19 industries to uncover what really makes trust thrive—or break down.

Over the next three decades, we have had the privilege to continue our research, to serve thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations around the world, and respond to the growing need for trust. What began as a curiosity and research interest has become our life's work: supporting people to build and rebuild trust with practical tools that foster it, sustain it, and make it part of their everyday lives—at work and at home.

What you will ultimately unearth in these pages is a road map to expand your awareness of the creative and collaborative possibilities that exist in trusted relationships. You will do this by learning how to cultivate trust in every area of your life through concrete actions and tangible behaviors designed to build and sustain lasting relationships.
